Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

I have just been to see our newest grandchild, a baby boy, born the previous day. His name is Toby, which apparently means ‘The Lord is Good’. As I marvelled at his perfect little body, and the tiny fingers that were clasping mine, the name seemed totally appropriate, and I was full of wonder at the amazing Creator God we have.

Toby is indeed ‘fearfully and wonderfully made’ (see today’s verse). Outwardly there is a likeness to his brother, and to his father at the same age, but he will be different from them and unique. Similarly, on the inside he has a unique identity known personally to God, who will have known him and chosen him even before the foundation of the earth (Ephesians 1:4). God has numbered the days of his life (Psalm 139:16) and knows all that lies ahead for him. How amazing is that?

I wonder if each of us can grasp the enormity of these truths, that God has chosen us and knows everything about us – the unique personality that He has given us, along with our gifting, our destiny and our calling. For many people, however, the knowledge of who they really are has been masked and hidden. This can happen as a result of traumatic or difficult situations in their lives. For instance, wounding and bad treatment by others can make people believe that they are not good enough as they are, so they can develop a ‘cover-up’ to hide the real person. This is usually sub-conscious, but it results in their true identity being masked. It makes it difficult for them then to form deep relationships with God and with others, and to walk in all that God has for them. Sometimes people just don’t like the way they are, and try to be like someone else.

God knows everything about us and He still loves us. He wants us to embrace who we really are, accepting ourselves and putting down all masks, so that we can blossom into our true God-given identity, which is unique. We are indeed fearfully and wonderfully made.

Prayer: Lord, thank You that I am fearfully and wonderfully made, and that You have a plan and a purpose for my life. Please forgive me for any ‘cover-ups’ that I have put in place to mask the real me. Help me to get rid of these, so that I can blossom more fully into the person You created me to be.
