Communication

by Tanya Person

After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
1 Kings 19:12-13, NIV

My husband and I recently moved into a bigger house than we have lived in for a very long time. I have realized that after years of living in small spaces, we have gotten into the habit of talking to each other from wherever we are in the house and the other could hear us. Now we are in a house that is designed to be quiet, and sound does not carry from one part of the house to the other.

However, we are still in the habit of just talking from the other room and being heard. So, we are spending a lot of time saying, “What?” And having to repeat ourselves. This can lead to much frustration, but I realize that it is stemming from the fact that we have just had this habit of talking and expecting the other to hear us. I’m realizing we are going to have to relearn to be more intentional in our communication.

Thinking about this, I wonder if we (people in general) could have a similar issue in our communication with God. Of course, God can always hear us when we say anything, because He is omnipresent and can hear everything without limitation, but what about us hearing Him?

We must be intentional to get into the right place to hear His voice. This may be a physical place, free from distractions, or it might be a mental place, quieting our hearts to hear Him. In my experience, we need to “tune in” in some way to be able to hear what He is saying.

So, whether outwardly or inwardly, I want to encourage all of us to move closer to God so that we can hear His voice. He wants to speak to us, and it is our responsibility to get into a place where we can hear Him.
