Coming Home
by Diane Watson
On the plane coming to the UK from Australia, I felt like I was coming home.
I was born in the UK, my parents immigrated to Australia when I was 8 years old, but though I was coming back to the UK, it wasn’t the country I was thinking of as home, it was the place I was going, where my Christian family were at an Ellel Centre called Pierrepont.
Thirteen years ago I had been the first student on the very first 6-month NETS Programme at Pierrepont. At that time as I felt God had called me to come; I had left my 4 children and husband back in Australia for the six months. It was exciting but also daunting. It was during those six months that I made many friends and where my life had been transformed. It was going back to that place and to the people there, that felt like home to me.
My views of what a home is have changed radically over the years. I used to yearn for my own home, but realized more and more that when we are being obedient to God’s will, He gives us the contentment to make wherever we are our home. We may not own an earthly house, but even if we do, that is not necessarily home. The old saying ‘home is where the heart is’, is true. Where our family, either biological or Christian brothers and sisters are, that is our home.
The scripture that speaks about God the Father and Jesus, His Son, making their home in us, is truly amazing. The best place to be in all the world is in the will of God, being obedient to Him. You don’t need earthly homes or houses to make you feel content and secure. When you are doing God’s will He provides for all our needs more than we could even ask or imagine and He makes His home in us.
Prayer: Loving Heavenly Father, help me to be obedient to Your teaching and to love You with all my heart so that You may feel welcomed into my heart and make your home in me. In Jesus name, Amen.
