Choices Have Consequences

“But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord”.
Joshua 24:15, NIV

Just lately it has been impressed upon me quite forcibly that choices always have consequences. No matter which path we choose, or what decisions we make, there are inevitably certain consequences which will follow, either for good or bad.

For example, Joe and I decided to move from the North East to the North West of England in September 1981. The consequences of that move were enormous, not just for us, but for our family too. One of the positive outcomes was that we became involved with Ellel Ministries, which proved beneficial for our future. Another was that one of our daughters met and married a man from the North West (although the other daughter did choose to return to the North East for her choice of a marriage partner and, by the way, both of them made good choices of marriage partners).

Sometimes the consequences of our decisions can be difficult and not what we really expected or wanted, and we then have to learn to live with the results. Looking back, I am so glad that the most important and the best choice which I ever made was when I was fifteen, when I chose to become a follower of Jesus. So many other important choices have been built upon that first one.

I wonder what choices you have made over the years and what the consequences have been? With Jesus as Lord of your life you can be assured that He is working your choices and the consequences together for your good.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the good choices which You have helped me to make, especially the one to make Jesus Lord and Saviour of my life. Please forgive me for my wrong choices and give me the strength to live with the consequences of them, as You work out Your purposes in my life. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
