“But … they need me!”
by Roger Pook
Do you believe this verse for other people - as well as for yourself?
Many Christians find that they become committed to more and more activities, and that they become trapped in these activities by an insistent thought: “If I don't do this, who else will? The people that I am serving in this work need me. If I ever give up, they will suffer. Please God, just give me the strength to keep on going!”
This way of thinking is based on a fallacy – that God will somehow be disappointed in you if you’re no longer able to keep up the same hectic pace. There’s actually an underlying sinful assumption as well – that God’s not able to provide for the needs of those that you serve, if you don't do it.
So, here is the shocking truth: God’s more interested in you than in ‘your ministry’. What you do is more for your good than for the good of others. God will meet their needs, maybe through you, maybe in another way.
“But God, who will do my present work if I don't? There are people who are counting on me!” God says, “That’s none of your business”. If you have done the work faithfully, and have imparted the same vision to others, then you can move on when God says it’s time to do so. God has His own plans anyway, and He loves you too much to let you be burned out.
Prayer: Lord, I do believe that you supply all my needs. Now please help me to believe that truth for other people as well. Forgive me for thinking that I’m the answer, because only You are the answer. Thank You for loving me and helping me to grow in faith through the tasks that You give me.
