Broken Cup

I recently went to an antiques fair with my mum. She loves to collect plates, plates which are usually broken. At this fair she brought a cup and saucer because she loved the way it had been broken and mended again. The cup had been mended at a time when restorers put staples along the crack. The way it had been mended made it more unique and beautiful in her eyes.

This is what God wants to do for us. He wants to heal our unique wounds, in a way that is unique to us, in a way that makes us more beautiful and closer to whom He designed us to be. Some people would have been put off by the cup having a crack in it, and some people can feel others are put off by their wounds. But with God that is never the case. God loves us however deeply we are wounded.

At that same antiques fair there was a lady who restored broken belongings for their owners. She said the first rule of restoration is “to do no further harm.” And that is how God will mend His people. He wants to draw us close and gently stitch us back together to be more beautiful and closer to our maker through knowing His restorative touch, through knowing we can trust Him to heal and soothe. He wants to put us back together by strengthening our cracks with His love and wisdom.

Prayer: Father, You are the maker of heaven and earth and of us. You know our joys and pains and care passionately about our wellbeing. Help us to yield to Your healing touch so we can become more and more the person You made us to be. Amen.
