The whole course is exceptional very relevant to me. I have gone away with a lot to think about. I have learnt that I don't have just to cope and be so independent. God is good & loves me, even me!.... Read More...

Bring Down Your Giants

And David said to Saul “I cannot walk with these for I have not tested them”, so David took them off.
1 Samuel 17:39b, NKJV

I recently had cause to stop and think about David and Goliath. I was looking out across a valley, and on the horizon was an electricity pylon standing like a huge giant. As I looked, my mind started to think about the giants we all face in our lives; the ones we just don’t seem to get victory over.

Perhaps we’ve got caught in a trap where nothing seems to have worked, so we’ve even begun to accept the giants of our lives. Perhaps our giant is a habit, an addiction, a fear, a relationship or a phobia we just don’t seem to be able to overcome.

We may try different kinds of ways to deal with these issues, and ask others for advice, thinking that if something works for them it will work for us. When it doesn’t work, we try something else. We go on trying ‘different types of armour and weapons’ but never see the giant destroyed.

David was only a young man, but when he saw the giant Goliath with his taunts and threats he decided to go and destroy him. At first King Saul tried to send David out wearing his armour. But this armour was no good for David, as he could hardly move in it (1 Samuel 17:38-39). After taking the wrong armour off, David went out to face Goliath with the weapons he knew how to use, a sling shot and five round stones. But in the eyes of everyone around him David was ill equipped to overcome such a big and strong opponent.
But these simple weapons show us that it’s not always complicated to bring down giants. David went out in the name of the Lord God. And, with one well aimed stone, he brought Goliath crashing to the ground. Then, drawing a sword, David killed him and cut off his head.

We may think the giants in our lives are the same as those in other people’s lives, but they’re not. They’re different. Each of us is a unique person, with problems that are unique to us. And even if we use some of the weapons others use, the way we use them will be different.

But all of us need to be using the truth of God’s Word in the battle to bring giants down. ‘If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free’ (John 8:31-32). We have the assurance ‘Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed’ (John 8:36).So let’s all take courage and seek God’s way in our lives, and in His name bring our giants down.

Prayer: Father, I thank You that with You nothing is impossible, and that through the death and resurrection of Jesus I can have victory over all things in my life. Give me the courage I need to face the giants in my life with reality and truth. And help me, Father, to gain the victory over them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
