Baby Rabbits

by Jilly Lyon-Taylor

Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that spoil the vines.
Song of Solomon 2:15, NKJV

I was working in our vegetable patch recently when I realised that our young Labrador, Sasha, was also digging. After a while she had made a hole big enough for her head and shoulders to be completely hidden from sight. A little later she emerged looking very pleased with herself, carrying something in her mouth. This turned out to be a tiny baby rabbit. It was still alive, as she had been very gentle with it, so I picked it up and carefully returned it to its nest deep in the burrow.

Later on, I thought how inconsistent I was being. I normally do my best to keep rabbits out of my garden, because they eat my vegetables and nibble the new shoots on the flowering plants, and yet here I was trying to ensure the survival of a baby rabbit! It was hard to think that this sweet soft little creature would one day become a problem to me, so I let it live.

We can be a bit like this with ungodly things in our lives. There can be a habit or behaviour which seems insignificant and harmless. It can start out quite small and we can grow attached to it. We can persuade ourselves that it is not too serious and therefore do nothing about it. However, if left unchecked, those behaviours or attitudes can grow until they become a large issue which can eat away at the good fruit in our lives.

Are there any ‘little rabbits’ that you’ve allowed to live on in your life which are now causing problems? These things can start small but develop into major issues. Today’s verse from the Song of Solomon tells us that it is the little foxes that spoil the vines. Vines represent fruitfulness for the Lord, and we need to get rid of anything, however seemingly small and innocuous, that would hamper us in bearing fruit for Him.

Prayer: Lord, please forgive me for allowing a ‘baby rabbit’ to live and grow in my life (be specific …) I realise that this is hindering the fruitfulness that You desire for my life, and I repent of this particular behaviour or attitude. Please help me to get rid of it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
