Are You Having a Bad Day?
by David Cross
I recently wrote a short article in the Ellel Ministries Luke 9:11 UK handbook, and included an extract from the journal of John Wesley, which I’ve copied again below. I felt it worth our being reminded that even the great men of God didn’t always have great days!
If you’re experiencing a difficult time, when everything and everybody seems to be working against you, take a moment to reflect on these few weeks in the life of this extraordinary preacher. There must have been moments when John Wesley wondered about the validity of his calling to share God’s word in hundreds of towns and villages up and down the land. The response he got, especially from apparent fellow believers, must surely have been disheartening at times.
Amazingly, despite the setbacks, he just kept on keeping on, and trusted that the Lord would continue to be his vindication, his provider and his protector. God was indeed truly faithful and He still is!
Sunday a.m., May 5: Preached in St. Ann's; was asked not to come back any more.
Sunday p.m., May 5: Preached at St. John's; deacons said, “Get out and stay out”.
Sunday a.m., May 12: Preached at St. Jude's; can't go back there either.
Sunday p.m., May 12: Preached at St. George's; kicked out again.
Sunday a.m., May 19: Preached at St. Somebody Else's; deacons called a special meeting and said I couldn't return.
Sunday p.m., May 19: Preached on the street; kicked off the street.
Sunday a.m., May 26: Preached out in a meadow; chased out of meadow when a bull was turned loose during the service.
Sunday a.m., June 2: Preached out at the edge of town; kicked off the highway.
Sunday p.m., June 2: Afternoon service, preached in pasture; 10,000 people came.
Prayer: Father God, give me the perseverance I need to keep on when I’m feeling that only You are on my side. Keep me from foolish self-pity, resentment and despair. Thank You that it really can be a very good day when I fully trust in You. Amen.
