An Invitation

Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat!
Isaiah 55:1, NIV

Our miraculous human bodies are made up of approximately 60 to 70 percent water and can survive only days without a drink. Water is essential for life. The Bible is brimming with Scriptures about water, physical and spiritual. Right at the beginning of Genesis 1:1 we see that God’s Spirit was hovering over the waters of the earth.

God delivered His children out of slavery by parting a body of water (Exodus 14:15-21). Jesus Himself was baptised in the muddy waters of the Jordan River (Matthew 3:13, Luke 3:21, Mark 1:9). His first miracle happened in Cana where He turned water into wine (John 2:6-10).

You can find Jesus having an intimate conversation with a Samaritan woman beside a well in John 4, offering her living water that will quench her thirst and fill her with eternal life.

And then in John 7:37-38, we read, ‘On the last and greatest day of the Feast of Tabernacles Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him”’. Water is essential for human life but Living water is essential for eternal life.

At a busy family gathering, my two-year-old granddaughter seemed to be missing, so I went through the house to discover her whereabouts. Much to my dismay, I found her in the bathroom with her head submerged in the toilet loudly slurping up the water! The simple truth was that she was thirsty and everyone was too busy to get her a drink, so she went to the place where she knew water could always be found and took care of her own thirst. Her dripping wet smile told me how very pleased she was with herself.

There is a spiritual thirst in every man and woman that can only be satisfied in Jesus Christ who is the fountain of Living Water (John 7). It’s His desire to re-connect you with the source of that living water, which is God your true Father.

In response to a very real spiritual thirst, we can explore many different options and spend a lot of money looking for a drink that will satisfy. Sometimes, it’s to deal with the pain and ache within, sometimes, it’s because we have been led astray and sometimes, it’s because we’re trying to take care of our own needs.

Today, Jesus is still calling out in a loud voice, “COME!” You only need to accept that it’s through faith in Him that you’ll be satisfied and filled. As today’s Scripture states, there’s no cost to you. He already paid the cost on the cross at Calvary.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You that I can come to You when I’m empty, thirsty, weary, hungry or scared, and I can be certain of Your faithfulness, based on the truth of Your Word. I accept Your invitation today. Forgive me for drinking from dirty fountains and wells and for trying to meet my own needs. Just as my body needs fresh clean water to survive, would You refresh me and fill my spirit with Your pure Living Water today. I’m asking in faith, trusting You to do the rest. Amen.
