A lamp to my feet
by Richard Fila
I was watching a documentary about a jumbo jet on its way to America which lost control and went into a violent fall. The pilots on that flight suddenly found themselves in an emergency situation. The calm controlled cruising flight was gone in an instant and it was replaced with a terrifying, inexplicable fall. The good news was that the pilots managed to recover control of the plane and pull it up out of the dive before it hit the ground. In order to do this they had to move the flight controls in a precise way depending on which way the plane was pointing - the wind rushing past their plane would bring them back to safety if they could just get it to flow over the wings in the right way.
The pilots experienced incredible gravitational forces during that fall and became disorientated. Even worse a cloud obscured their view of the horizon so they didn`t know even which way up their plane was! Gravitational forces made them feel they were the right way up when in fact they were upside down. At this point in the emergency the pilot had to make a key choice - something he would have been long trained to do - to trust his instrumentation and believe what his artificial horizon display was telling him against what felt like the truth. In the chaos of the confusing forces it probably felt crazy to trust this little piece of equipment against his natural instincts! But, in so doing he regained control of the plane and was able to lead it back to a safe landing.
I think the Word of God can be like that artificial horizon at times. It can seem to go against the logical thinking I`ve been trained to use my whole life - defying what I think is common sense. Despite this I know I must always make a choice to trust it wholeheartedly and use it as the foundation for my life, together with a living relationship with Jesus. At times of shaking it`s the solid foundation Of God`s Word that keeps us all safe and steadfast as Christians. Our faith will be contested for by the world, family members, or even other Christians, but if we hold fast to the truth of God`s word it will save us - especially in times of trial.
Prayer: Father God, thank You for the gift of Your word. Thank You that it`s true, unchanging and dependable. I choose to trust Your word and ask that You deepen that trust, as I take continue my walk of faith in You. Please help me in times of trial, and when others would question this trust, so I am able to hold steadfast to the end, in Jesus` name, Amen.
