A Cloudy Problem

Even today when they read Moses’ writings, their hearts and their minds are covered with a veil so they do not understand the truth. But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. For the Lord is the Spirit and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. The Lord who is the Spirit makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.
2 Corinthians 3:14-18, NIV

June 2012 was an interesting month for my husband and I. Neither of us were seeing clearly. My husband’s vision was blurred and dull due to cataracts. I was experiencing huge struggles with both distance and near vision. Oh the joys of aging!

The specialist shocked us when he said : “Mr. Fode, you are very close to losing your drivers licence”. Vision problems sneak up on you. You may not realise how bad it is until it’s too late and you face serious repercussions.

Thanks to the miracle of cataract surgery Al’s vision is now better then perfect and new glasses have solved my problems. Vision problems are limiting and exhausting.

In many ways cataracts and glasses are a good 21st century illustration of a problem scripture addresses. Our scripture for today talks about veils. Veils hamper our vision both physically and spiritually. When we don`t see well, driving can be hazardous with possible disastrous consequences. Veiled vision causes us to miss danger right ahead.

Spiritual veils hamper us from seeing truth and responding rightfully. They seem to make every decision more difficult. We may not hear God or see what He is doing very easily.

Veils distort our vision of who God is and all that he offers. We may not live out of His love, protection, provision and transforming power. Veils distort our view of God, ourselves and our world. The distortions are unique to our life experiences. They can be formed by family issues, losses, abuse, physical limitations, disasters and a multitude of other life circumstances.

Maybe our view of God is like that of the Israelites in Moses’ day. To them God was a God who loves and guides you if you’re good, and then roasts you if you’re bad. They believed they had to do things perfectly, or God would reject them. They were often afraid of God, not wanting to come very near Him. God seemed like the high school principal in a grey suit, who never remembers your name, but is always leafing unhappily through your files, as he looks at you over his glasses.

A cataract is a cloudy lens. When removed and replaced with a flawless crystal clear lens designed specifically for you, vision and freedom are restored.

What veil distorts your view of God, yourself and your world? What caused it to form? Are you ready to be restored to life and freedom? Can you imagine what living a life of freedom, impossible joy and destiny would look like?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I ask You to show me my cataracts, and I choose to submit to Your skilled and gentle hands. Enable me to see things through the clear lens of truth. I ask You to heal me and set me free to walk in joy, freedom and Your destiny for me. Amen.
