The Need to Understand

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord.

I came across these words recently: the ways of God can never be limited to man’s ability to understand. It’s not wrong to seek God for understanding. In fact, it has been an important aspect of the journey of Ellel Ministries. Interestingly, many of those who have been involved with the Ministry, over the last thirty or more years, have come from a science or engineering background. I was trained as a civil engineer, encouraged to pursue with determination answers to challenging structural problems.

Over the years of Ellel, we have discovered that, in the healing ministry of Jesus today, it is often very important to ask God why a particular issue has affected someone’s life, seeking to discover, through the revelation of the Holy Spirit, the root causes of today’s damaging fruit. Indeed, James encourages us to ask God for wisdom (James 1:5), and to expect that what we need to know will be given to us, in order to fulfil His plans and purposes.

However, I have had to learn that I cannot possibly expect to understand all that God is doing in any situation, whether at the personal or the global level. It’s utterly foolish for me think otherwise. Of course, only God has the complete picture of the spiritual and physical realms, and only He can order and direct this universe towards its final consummation.

And the wonderful truth is that, in what we don’t understand, we can completely trust Him.
