You Are a Letter

by Pam Smith

20 January 2013

« Previous Day | Next Day »

You yourselves are a letter of recommendation, written on your hearts, to be known and read by all men; and you show that you are a letter from Christ, delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the Living God, not on tablets of stone but on the tablets of human hearts.
2 Corinthians 3:3, RSV

A letter can be read again and again. We often write a letter to someone to be sure that they have the facts, and they know what we’re trying to say to them. But Paul is telling us that we ‘are’ a letter and we don’t necessarily have to say anything. They will be ‘looking at the good change in our hearts’ says The Living Bible. What kind of letter will we be? Will it be one that won’t be discarded? Will it be a kind letter, a compassionate and loving letter, an encouraging and uplifting letter, or a letter of well-being and hope? Will it be a letter of contentment and contagious joy? Maybe it will be a letter of comfort and peace. What will those around us read?

We Christians have no veil over our faces. We’ve understood the truth. But there are many people who are quite blind to the life that Jesus offers, and the price He has paid for us; the price He paid so we could be forgiven and have clear consciences before God, and so we can start out on our way to a perfect destiny.

We may not be able to speak to them, and they may not want to listen to us, but we can be a letter of love that God wants them to read. While we are willing to be that letter the Holy Spirit will find someone who wants to read it, and a miracle will occur.

We may be the only one in that particular place. One in a family, or a classroom, or a workplace like an office, shop, factory, charity, church, the Forces, hospital, residential home, or many unnamed places where you find yourself. Don’t be discouraged because you’re the only one who knows Jesus there. This may be the very reason why you’ve been chosen to be in that place.

Prayer: Lord help me to be a Living Letter from You to those around me that don’t know You. May I be open and honest and radiate Your life and character, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
