What’s Your Job?

He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Micah 6:8, ESV

One day I found myself thinking about a friend and wondering or worrying about some things in their life. I started to talk to God about it, because I was so burdened by it and found myself saying things like “I wonder if…  Perhaps they are… I think they might…” I went from praying to surmising about their struggle and their decisions.

Do you know what I felt God say to me? “Catherine, this isn’t your job. I don’t want you to judge and you don’t need to work it out because that isn’t your job.”

It was an eye-opening moment.

I stopped and acknowledged before God that that was exactly what I was trying to do. I was trying to work something and someone out that was really not mine to understand. A weight lifted off my shoulders as I thanked God, I could just leave the situation and my friend with Him.

It’s got me thinking about other things I take on as “my job” that are not for me to do or carry. This week I have been reminded that…

I don’t have to judge, because He is the Judge. Only He sees and knows all things.

I don’t have to always know the answer, because He is the One with answers that will make a difference.

I don’t have to work out how things will happen, because He is the One who is working all things out.

I don’t have to convince people of anything, because He is the One who reveals and knows what’s true.

It’s a huge relief to only stick to the job description He has given us. What is that job description? What is our purpose?  Isn’t it simply being a child, a son or daughter trusting our Father, and to be a sheep being led by the Shepherd?  The Bible is clear on our major purpose and focus – to love God, love others and to display His Glory. The above verse in Micah gives us more than enough to focus on each day without picking up things that are outside our pay grade.

If you feel yourself burdened today, maybe ask God to show you what or who you are picking up that you are not meant to be carrying. Perhaps He wants to show you some things that are not your job, but which are His.
