Seeds of the Kingdom

What’s on God’s Menu?

by Roger Pook

Look at the crows: they don't plant seeds or gather a harvest; they don't have storage rooms or barns; God feeds them! You are worth so much more than birds!
Luke 12:24, GNB

Some of us work on autopilot in the morning. How we start our day is so familiar and repetitive, we could almost do it with our eyes shut, right down to getting the breakfast ready. One morning a while back I too was working more or less on autopilot as I sat down and poured the milk on my muesli. Automatically I gave thanks for my breakfast and put in the spoon.

Then for some reason my eye concentrated on just one grain in the muesli and a thought came to my mind. As this grain of wheat was growing, God already had a purpose for it – He already knew that this particular grain, together with a few hundred others, was destined to feed just me on exactly this morning. My breakfast menu was already worked out by God, maybe months before!

This helps us to understand how God provides for us. He doesn’t have to search for the good things that we need. Everything is already in His storehouse or planned far ahead of time. Now we know how George Mueller was able to give thanks for his orphans’ food when there was none on the table and nothing in the cupboard. It was all there on God’s menu, ready to be served – and it arrived.

What is your need for provision and blessing at this moment? Whatever it is, it’s on God’s menu, with your name on it, ready to be served. Be thankful!

Prayer: ALMIGHTY God, Father of all mercies, we, thine unworthy servants, do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all men; We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all, for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory… Amen.(Part of the General Thanksgiving, Book of Common Prayer, 1662)
