Walking in Darkness

Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:16, NIV

One of the things about living in Scotland we have had to get used to is the short days of the winter time. Waking in the dark, going to work in the dark and the darkness settling in well before leaving work can leave you feeling down and wanting to hide away in the warmth, familiarity and light of your own home.

You only need to read a newspaper or watch a news bulletin on TV to know that the days of this world are darkening as the evil one gains momentum in his efforts to keep the human race away from God. What is our response to this? Is it to sit in the comfort and warmth of a safe life - church, ministry, family - and never venture into the darkness in the world around us?

In this verse Jesus is telling us to let our light shine before men; before those who live in darkness. For that we have to move out of our comfortable, familiar and safe environments. We need to be willing to walk in the darkness of the world, displaying the Light that is Jesus Christ.

So let’s not hide this eternal light in our churches, in our ministries or in our family units. Let us, with confidence, take our light into the place where it’s needed - the world of sinners, the world of strife, hatred and persecution; the world that Jesus came from heaven to and the world He died for.

Prayer: Father God, I‘m sorry I’ve hidden Your light away from those who need to see it the most. I pray You will help me let my light shine as I walk in the world I live in and that those who see it will turn their praises to You. For Your Name and Your Glory, Amen.
