The Problem of Intelligence

Over the last few decades, many scientists have been facing a huge problem, not least those who would describe themselves as materialists, a belief that everything that exists, however complex, is made up solely from matter and energy, with no external influence.
Scientific discovery has progressed rapidly in recent years, including the realisation of the astounding intricacy of every living cell. Previously, it had been thought that it was simply made up of a highly complex mixture of chemicals interacting to give life to the cell.
However, following the discovery of DNA, the molecule in every living organism that contains its genetic code, researchers have realised that the DNA contains very specific instructions for how the cell is to operate. This set of instructions, or information, is in the form of a programming language, like a sophisticated version of a programme in a computer that tells it how to perform the required functions.
The problem for many has been that, where this kind of information is seen to be operating in any other sphere, that information has, without exception, come from an intelligent outside agency. In fact, countless researchers into cell biology are having to admit that a form of intelligent language or words exists in every living cell, in order to organise its activity.
We need not be surprised.
