The Price of Grace

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
Romans 3:23-24 ESV

It is said that there’s no such thing as a free lunch. This is because all things come with a price, hidden or otherwise, and somebody has to pay for it. It doesn’t just happen. These days we seem to be bombarded by tempting slogans like ‘a free gift when you buy this,’ or ‘buy one and get one free.’ But the cost of that free item may be built into the price of the article we’re buying. A million pound lottery win is paid for by all the participants who bought a ticket and didn’t win.

How about the grace of God? There’s a throne room to which we’re all invited. It is a place of retreat in times of trouble, where we can carry our burdens of sin and guilt and lay them at the feet of the One who has no sin. ‘Let us then approach God`s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need` (Hebrews 4:16). Praise the Lord for His mercy and provision! Thank God that He takes us as we are, with all our faults, to ‘transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body’ (Philippians 3:21). ‘But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ - by grace you have been saved’ (Ephesians 2:4-5).

We’re so thankful for the mercy and the grace of God, which is utterly dependable. This comes to us in and through the person of Jesus Christ. He’s the safe haven we can run to. He’s the support we can lean on. He’s the covering that protects us and He is the strong tower in whom we know we are safe (Proverbs 18:10).

This inexhaustible treasury continually showers blessings upon us, and yet there’s no demand for payment. All we have to do is receive. There are no questions asked and no conditions required.

We don’t have to pay this price, because it has already been paid by Jesus Christ. It’s costly because it’s the price of our sin which He willingly took to the cross. He surrendered His deity, His blood and His life as the ransom for our freedom. He bowed his head to the will of the Father, and freedom was bought through the love and mercy of God for us all. ‘To all who received Him.. He gave the right to become children of God’ (John 1:12).

‘For by grace you have been saved, through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God’ (Ephesians 2:8).

Prayer: Thank you Jesus for all You did for me on Calvary. You paid the price for all my sins by Your precious blood. You gave me the gift of a new life in exchange for your death. Please forgive me that I have not always fully appreciated how much this cost You. I want to treasure it always by living for You every day. Please help me Lord Jesus. Amen.
