Seeds of the Kingdom

The Immeasurable Universe

“This is what the Lord says, ‘Only if the heavens above can be measured and the foundations of the earth below be searched out will I reject all the descendants of Israel because of all they have done,’ declares the Lord.”
Jeremiah 31:37, NIV

Science has never been able to measure the extent of the Universe. The farthest identified star, known as Icarus, was spotted with the Hubble telescope and lies nine billion light years away from planet Earth! That’s the distance light will travel at 186,000 miles per second in nine billion years. And who knows what might lie beyond Icarus? You cannot measure something that is without limits.

When God was declaring His love for the people of Israel, He used this extraordinary fact to make it very clear that even though God’s people had sinned, often grievously, His love for them would never cease. They were still the people through whom God’s eternal plan for the salvation of mankind was being fulfilled. And only if the universe could be measured would His love for Israel cease and His plans fail.

The immeasurability of the Universe is a message to the whole world that God’s plans for Israel, and God’s plan through Israel for Jesus to be the Saviour of the world, are irrefutable and unchangeable. And that He alone is able to save and redeem mankind from sin.

When Jesus returns to the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem (Zechariah 14:3-4) the focus of the whole world will be upon Israel as God’s plans reach their fulfilment in time, ready for eternity beyond. So, when you look up at the stars and wonder just how big the Universe actually is, remind yourself that God has a plan and that His plans are always fulfilled.

Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for the amazing Universe in which we live on planet Earth. Thank you that its immeasurable vastness reminds us of the faithfulness of your promises and that Your Word can always be trusted. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
