Taste and See

Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him! Fear the Lord, you his godly people, for those who fear him will have all they need. Even strong young lions sometimes go hungry, but those who trust in the Lord will lack no good thing.
Psalm 34:8-10, NLT

I was out shopping at our local supermarket, getting in a few items of food for the weekend. I remembered that we were getting low on coffee, so I went to the stand to get some more. I saw the brand that we usually get there, but there was another sort I was also interested in. I hadn’t had it before, and I wondered what it would taste like. It seemed difficult to make a decision. I stood looking at both bags of coffee knowing I had to get one or the other. In the end, I decided to try the one I hadn’t had before, and left the other one on the shelf.

I couldn’t help thinking of the above Scripture text. The sense of taste is very individual. I can’t experience it for someone else, and they can’t for me. It’s always a blessing to hear of other believers who’ve proved the Lord’s goodness in their lives, and sometimes in very difficult circumstances, but the Lord is inviting each of us to ‘taste’ Him, for ourselves, and prove in our experience that He’s good. He promises that those who put their trust in Him will lack no good thing. It’s challenging when the Lord is asking us to step out into unfamiliar ground. We tend to want to stick with what we know, but Jesus assures us that if we follow Him, become His disciple and obey Him, then we won’t walk in darkness.

Is there a new challenge you are facing in your life? God is inviting you to step out with Him and you’ll lack no good thing. Try it and see!

Prayer: Lord, I have to admit that I find change hard and challenging. I tend to want to stick with what I know. Please would you help me to put my trust in You because You are always faithful and will never fail me and I will lack no good thing. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
