Secret and Revealed
by Richard Hemery
This verse speaks of two categories of knowledge, the secret things and the revealed things. The secret things belong to God. The revealed things belong to us, and our children. There are secrets and mysteries that we cannot know now. Proverbs 25:2 says ‘It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings’. Yet King David said ‘Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain’ (Psalm 139:6). Jesus displayed the same humility as David in this respect, which it would be good for us to emulate. Jesus said only the Father knew the time when He would return. This is an example of a hidden thing. Jesus didn’t know the time, and He was content not to know. He could have asked the Father, but in humility He left that knowledge to Him.
Let’s leave the secret things where they belong. The revealed things are all ours – the whole Bible with all its multifaceted wisdom – more than enough for us. But what’s the reason for the revelations, given to us and our children? That we may do them, and that we may obey the word of the Lord. Sometimes we just let God’s word tickle our ears but it doesn’t change our hearts. Can we expect more revelation if we don’t act on that already given us, and encourage our children to do likewise? In fact, children, and those with child-like hearts, are often better at believing and doing, and God reveals things to them more readily than adults who think they know it all! Jesus once said ‘I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children’ Matthew 11:25.
Prayer: Dear Lord, we acknowledge that there are secret things too wonderful for us. Thank You for the wealth of revealed things which You’ve freely given to us and our children. Father, help us to obey them. Amen.
