Restoring Immunity
by David Cross
As I write this seed, I’m preparing to teach on a course looking at the issue of allergies. So many people these days are seriously affected by seemingly harmless substances such as pollen and food proteins, experiencing a hypersensitive and distressing response from their immune system.
Our amazing immune system was designed by God to protect our bodies against harmful organisms, by detecting any threat and producing defensive antibodies. Throughout the Bible, God makes it clear that His covenant promises with mankind include our protection, both spiritually and physically. So how has this part of His system of protection got out of balance? God has certainly not broken His covenant with mankind but unfortunately we have constantly broken covenant with Him!
The immune system is God’s way of ensuring that the countless organisms that exist around us and within us are not able to gain a harmful control over our lives. Before the Fall in the Garden of Eden, God gave mankind authority over every other living thing (Psalm 8:6). The problem is that the constant sin in the world has upset God’s order, and men and women find themselves increasingly subject to a rule of spiritual darkness and disorder (1 John 5:19).
So what’s the answer? This is exactly what we’ll be exploring together as we seek the truth of God’s word and compare the history of our own lives with that truth. There’s certainly not always an easy answer, but I remember Jane’s testimony some months ago describing how a long-standing allergic skin rash disappeared overnight when she brought to God the pain and bitterness of a betrayal that had occurred many years before.
It is never wrong to come to God in order to seek a little more of His wisdom.
Prayer: Father, I thank You for my precious immune system. Please show me if there is any part of my life that I need to get right with You, in order to help bring this God-given protection back into balance. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
