Seeds of the Kingdom

Reflectors

We, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

One night, during a recent full moon, I woke up to see light streaming through my windows. I leapt out of bed, thinking that it was morning and that I must have overslept. However, on checking my watch I found that it was only 3.00 am! The light from the moon was so bright that I could see everything clearly outside, and it was casting deep shadows. As I thought about this, I marvelled at how much light the moon can project, even though it has no natural light of its own – it is merely a reflector of what Genesis 1:16 calls the ‘greater light’.

As God’s people, are called to be lights in the world (Matthew 5:14), but the only way we can do this is if we reflect the ‘greater Light’ at work in our lives. Jesus Himself is the Light of the World (John 8:12), and, as we allow Him to live in us, His light should be evident in our lives. In these difficult days, we need more than ever to be shining in the world, reflecting His light, love and truth in a dark world that has largely turned its back on God.

Other reflectors that are part of everyday life are those in the middle of the road that are known as ‘cat’s eyes’. Like the moon, they have no light of their own, but as the car headlights shine on them, they are able to show the way. This is particularly helpful when driving in fog. Many people are living as if in a fog - of confusion, hopelessness, despair or depression, not knowing the way to go. As we reflect Jesus to them, let’s pray that this will help them to discover that He is ‘the way, the truth and the life’ (John 14:6) and the only hope in the world.

The way we can ensure that His light is in us is by spending time in His presence and being full of His Spirit. When Moses came down from the mountain after meeting with God, we are told in Exodus 34:29, ‘He was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the LORD’. As we spend time with the Lord, His light will fill us more and more. We may not be aware of this, like Moses, but we will be able to act as reflectors of His light and love to the world.

Prayer: Lord, thank You that You are the Light of the World. Please help me to live in Your light, spending time in Your presence, so that I can reflect Your great light to the people around me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
