Prayer At The Last Supper

by Philip Asselin

“And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.”
Matthew 26:30, NLT

This single verse contains a significant event during the Last Passover of Jesus. When we read it there seems little to it. Just a simple hymn. However, it was much more than that. It was speaking aloud the Hallel Psalms 113-118 from memory by Jesus and His disciples. Over this Easter time, I encourage you to read these Psalms and picture Jesus speaking them aloud because many of those words would have had a huge emotional impact on Him because they were speaking about what would shortly take place.  Let me just mention a few of them:

  • The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone, the Lord has done this and it is marvelous in our eyes. Psalm 118:22,23

  • I shall not die but live and declare the works of the Lord. The Lord has disciplined me severely, but He has not given me over to death. Psalm 118:17,18

  • The cords of death entangle me; the anguish of the grave came over me … Then I called on the name of the Lord: ‘O Lord save me!... You, Lord, have delivered me from death.’ Psalm 116, 3,4 & 8

  • Bind the sacrifice with cords, up to the horns of the altar. Psalm 118:27

  • Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His faithful servants. Psalm 116:15

  • I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord. I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all His people. Psalm 116: 13,14

  • The Lord is with me I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? The Lord is with me; He is my helper. I look in triumph on my enemies. Psalm 118: 6,7

As Jesus uttered the words of the Hallel psalms as He had done all His adult life, He drew strength from them to accomplish what His father had planned.  They are an encouragement to us too. They declare the power and sovereignty of God. How He will deliver His people and not forsake them. All achieved through the death and resurrection of the one who spoke them almost 2,000 years ago
