Pot-bound Plants

by Roger Pook

Keep your roots deep in him, build your lives on him, and become stronger in your faith, as you were taught.
Colossians 2:7, GNB

We’ve always had rows of house-plants in pots on windowsills around the house. Most of them flourish, but some really don’t seem to like being where they are. They constantly demand more and more care - the right kind of food, the right amount of water, the right temperature, the right position – or they start to wilt.

Often, the problem is that the weak and needy plants have become “pot-bound”. The roots have grown so profusely that they are tightly packed in the pot and can’t take in nourishment, however much time and effort we spend on them. What they need is to be re-potted in a larger pot with fresh compost, or even planted out in the garden.

Are you a “pot-bound plant”? You’ve been happy in the same place for years, but instead of growing, you feel weak and discouraged, and feel a need for more care, more love, more time, more prayer, more ministry – or you’ll start to wilt.

This could be the time for you to be re-potted into another pot with fresh compost. You may even need to be transplanted into a totally different environment. Either process means moving out of your familiar “comfort zone”, which has now ceased to be comfortable, and Christianity was never intended to be a comfort zone anyway.

Only then will you be able to sink your roots deep into Jesus, as you grow in him to be the strong and beautiful plant that he intended.

Prayer: Jesus, I want to find my spiritual health and strength and growth only in you, not in other people. If you want to move me out of my uncomfortable comfort zone, then I’m willing to go. Amen.
