On what are you basing your confidence?

I read recently that a UK telephone directory enquiry service has recently released figures for 2008. During that year there were 20 million callers. Those wanting information about churches and religious organisations fell by 24 percent whereas those wanting information about clairvoyants, palmistry and other spiritual services went up by 161 per cent.
We live in days when security is threatened on every hand. Things that people in the western world have put their confidence in are no longer trustworthy. There is no guarantee that things will turn out all right and so many people are turning to divination for assurance, which is, of course, false assurance.
In the text above King Hezekiah was living in days of unrest and insecurity. He was faced with a tremendous challenge, “In what are you basing your confidence?” His people were afraid. Even his military officers needed reassurance so he gathered them together and spoke words of encouragement to them.
They simply needed to be strong and courageous. There was no need for fear or discouragement. Even though a great army was attacking them they were safe because, “There is greater power with us than with Assyria.” The people gained confidence from the words of the king who trusted in God.
Jesus warned that before He comes again men’s hearts would be failing them for fear (Luke 21:26 KJV). As we read Scripture we can sometimes see its words being fulfilled in our time. God’s word is true and God Himself is true to His word.
On what are you basing your confidence? Here is a promise for today, "Blessed are those who trust in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.”
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unchanging character. Thank You that all Your words are true and Your purposes stand firm to the end. Please forgive me for any times when I have placed my confidence in earthly things because I have failed to fully trust in You. Today I hold on to the changeless promises of Your word. Amen.
