Mourning into Dancing

by Pam Smith

You have turned for me my mourning into dancing.
Psalm 30:11, NKJV

I could never dance. I didn’t like it. I felt stupid and I couldn’t do the steps. But then something rose up inside my spirit and I wanted to dance for the Lord. It was out of thankfulness and overwhelming joy.

Through loss in my life I was in deep mourning and cried out to the Lord. He spoke to me tenderly and His words comforted me. He reached down and picked me up from the mess and poured His healing love deep down, where it hurt. For the first time in my life I picked up a banner, on the Ellel Creativity course, and started to praise God with it. I was able to worship and express the joy in my soul, physically, with dancing.

In Psalm 30 David expresses his soul, ‘for you have lifted me up, you have healed me, you have kept me alive … weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning’ (Psalm 30:2-3; 5). He was able to glorify the Lord in this way.

Many people have found healing through being able to physically express the pain that is locked away inside them. But many can then express the joy that God pours into their souls, after He has healed or forgiven them. He often does this work in a quiet and gentle way that doesn’t expose anyone who feels vulnerable. God is able to turn something that we think is really dreadful in our lives into something beautiful.

"Teach me to dance to the beat of your heart
Teach me to move in the power of your Spirit,
Teach me to walk in the light of your presence,
Teach me to dance to the beat of your heart.
Teach me to love with your heart of compassion,
Teach me to trust in the Word of your promise,
Teach me to hope in the Day of your Coming.
Teach me to dance to the beat of your heart.

Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for changing me and bringing good things into my life. May I always be pliable in Your hands, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
