So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him…
Genesis 1:27, NIV

Our human spirit is the source of our creativity, because we are made in the likeness of God, the Creator. For various reasons many of us haven’t developed or been able to release this creativity within ourselves. This wasn’t God’s original intention, for we see in Genesis 2:19 that God was encouraging Adam to be creative, in giving the animals and birds names. God brought the animals and the birds to Adam to see what he would name them (Genesis 2:19). He could have told Adam what the names of the animals were but He enjoyed Adam’s choices of the names.

For quite a few years now some of us have been breaking down the inhibitions and restrictions to playing, having fun, and just enjoying oneself in the company of other Christian brothers and sisters. On our ‘Healing through Creativity’ courses we’ve tasted and seen for ourselves a whole new dimension to life.

There’s a paint workshop where people are given gigantic pieces of paper and bottles of paint to do what they like with. It is amazing the emotions which are released, such as anger and grief, as they pour the paint on the paper and rub it with their hands. Jesus wants to come and heal the pain. Then there are other creative activities such as woodwork, dance, singing, writing, swimming, sewing, knitting, pottery, card making, nature walks in the garden, and model making. For many, rediscovering their creativity has been part of a journey to deep and very profound healing - especially of psychological and even psychiatric conditions.

It’s great to come more fully alive, to play, to experiment, and to find the joy of creating things. When we do this we are behaving ‘just like our Father'!

Prayer: Thank you Lord that I am made in your image and likeness as a creative being. Help me to discover my true identity as I give space and time to developing my gifts. In Jesus, Amen
