Lost Glasses

What is the price of two sparrows - one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it.
Matthew 10:29, NLT

On holiday I took off my glasses in order to wash my hair. When the time came to put them back on again, I could not see where they were! I was in a different place and couldn’t locate them without my glasses on! After a while I became frustrated - they must be somewhere. Finally, in my frustration, I asked the Lord to help me find them. As quickly as I had asked for His help, the thought came to my mind that the Creator of heaven and earth, a majestic and awesome God, could not possibly be aware or bothered where my glasses were! How silly of me!

My thoughts went to our recent holiday to Iceland and Greenland: the glaciers, ice bergs, five thousand feet high majestic mountains, the massive waterfalls and much more that we had been overwhelmed by. Here I was in the Outer Hebrides and just last night we had returned from watching a brilliantly red sun setting over the ocean. The crashing waves had reminded me how God had set everything within His order and, because of this, the evening’s full moon would keep the ocean within its boundary and prevent it from flowing over us.

I continued looking for my glasses with these memories occupying my thoughts, when into my mind came the wonderful passage of Scripture which tells us that not even a sparrow falls to the ground without our Father in Heaven noticing. I was deeply impacted and overwhelmed with the love of God for His creation.

How could I doubt that the Maker of Heaven and Earth, the sky, the sea, the majestic mountains, the tiniest of shells, fish or flowers, would know where my glasses were! At that moment I saw how ridiculous it was of me to think that the Creator of the Universe was not capable of ordering my life and helping me if I asked Him. A God, who is capable of creating this remarkable earth with it’s perfect balance, order and beauty who is not also interested in every detail of my life does not make any sense whatsoever.

I cannot thank God enough that he gave His Son, Jesus, to open up the way for me to have relationship with Him and that Jesus left His Holy Spirit to lead, guide and comfort me. To think that He plans for my good, desires to help me with the smallest details of my life and to invite me to be in relationship with Him is a wonder beyond words for me today. Yes, He does want to be involved in all that concerns us, He does wait to be invited and He is a Father who longs to help us and longs for us to trust Him to provide and care for us.

My glasses, hidden from my eyes through the patterns on the bedspread, were instantly located as these thoughts filled my mind. Far more consequential was the deeper experience I received through asking the Lord to help me. In return He showed me the enormity of His love and care – wider than the widest ocean, deeper than the deepest sea and higher than the highest mountain. Why would I not turn to Him for every detail in my life and trust Him in every circumstance.

Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, I am so grateful for your intimate knowledge of me and for your tender care. I place my life afresh in your hands today knowing that you are not distant or unaware of everything concerning me. I ask you Lord Jesus to help me order my life according to your principles and your ways because as Creator, you know the best way and I need your help. Amen.
