Light of the World

The Lord is my light and Salvation. Whom shall I fear?
Psalm 27:1, NIV

When the sun shines on a facet of a diamond it sends out a full spectrum of light that has all the colours of the rainbow. When God does a work of grace in one of his children, there shines out of him or her, the gleam of the full spectrum of Gods’ beautiful character of love, grace and holiness, from within. Sometimes the person is quite unaware of this light.

A scientist can explain the diamonds’ spectrum of light but anyone void of the Spirit of God cannot explain the spectrum of Gods’ love.

Diamonds are formed miles below the surface of the earth. Imagine the darkness and isolation. When they are found they are crafted and fashioned to perfection.

Corrie ten Boom, whose family hid the Jews from the Nazis, was one of these diamonds. She was incarcerated in a prison camp where her sister died of the injuries inflicted by the Nazi prison guards. Her story was made into a film and tells of her isolation, loneliness, suffering, pressure and darkness. When I was a teenager I met this wonderful lady and, indeed, God’s light shone out from her person and her testimony.

There are many such diamonds that shine out with a deep, hidden work of God, and every so often we see a gleam of something beautiful that shines out of them.

A diamond doesn’t shine in the darkness; it’s only when the light connects with it. ‘God is my light and my salvation’ ( Psalm 27:1). He is the light which reaches the diamond that’s fashioned by him - the physical and the spiritual type. As I have mentioned before, a gem is often discovered after a hard rock has been broken. Often in our lives brokenness can reveal gems, but they remain hidden until the hard outer layer is broken open and the light floods in. Then their beauty is seen.

‘Light of the world, You stepped down into darkness, Opened my eyes, let me see. Beauty that made this heart adore you, Hope of a life spent with you’. (Chris Tomlin)

Prayer: Dear Lord, we can trust Your skill and workmanship on that final day. May others see the light that You’ve placed in each of us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
