Let There Be Light!

by Roger Pook

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
Genesis 1:3-4, AV

A few months ago I woke up and wondered for a moment where I was! Then it came back to me – we were staying with friends in Bucharest, Romania. It was nearly 5 a.m. but it was full daylight already and the June sunlight was pouring into the room.

As I looked around the room, a thought struck me: the first thing that God created was light, but I had never thanked him for this. Physical light reveals the beauty of creation, and spiritual light reveals the beauty of God and His love. I spent a while just thanking God for the gift of light.

Take a look around you, look out of the window. The daylight, or even your low-energy bulb, is revealing an uncountable number of amazing things that you may never have noticed before. Then think how many things the true light (John 1:9) has already revealed and will continue to reveal – so much greater and more wonderful than what physical light reveals.

Keep on looking and thinking.

Prayer: Father, with all my heart I thank You for the gift of Light! Amen.
