Leading Others
by Peter Brokaar
During a recent running race, I saw something that deeply moved me - a blind lady was running the same race with help of a guide. This man ran beside her, their arms were linked, and he was telling her which way the road was leading and where potential obstacles might be. I was really touched. This man was giving up his opportunity to run ‘for himself’ so that he could enable someone who would not otherwise have had the opportunity to race - a real inspiration!
Later I thought about the words of Jesus, ‘can the blind lead the blind’? Obviously, those functioning as a guide, need good eye-sight. Jesus went on to speak against hypocrisy, and about the necessity to acknowledge our own need for help before we’re qualified to help others. This got me really excited.
I’ve always had a longing in my heart to help others - a God-given desire that I’m sure most of us have. And we’re qualified to do so, as long as we’re honest about our own needs. If we let God help us, then He’ll give us the privilege of helping others. Isn’t He good? We don’t have to necessarily be ‘super smart’, a ‘super Christian’ (if there were such a thing) or ‘super strong’. We just need to be honest and humble.
I finished my race that day and felt very pleased with my accomplishment. But I bet that the man who ran alongside the blind lady felt even more fulfilled than I did that day. He used his gift of eye-sight to help someone who was in need.
Do you want to feel fulfilled? Do you have a desire to help others in their walk with God? Then seek to be humble and honest to others and God about your own need of a Saviour - and God will qualify you to be a helper to others. Praise God!
Prayer: Thank You, Father, that You can use someone like me to help others. But forgive me if I’ve pretended I don’t need any help myself. I do need help, and I need You. Will You help me, and will You bring me alongside others that I might be a help to them. Thank You. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
