Lead Me

by Yulia Kariuki

The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He refreshes my soul.
Psalm 23:1-3, NIV

Psalm 23 is such a beautiful Scripture. It is full of amazing verses about who God is and how He guides and protects us.

For the last couple of days, I was meditating on a verse of this Psalm, which says, ‘He leads me besides quiet waters’. We know that the idea of following requires depending on the person who is showing you the way. The lead knows the correct direction, the time needed for you to get there, and the route. The one who is led, on the other hand, needs to adjust to the speed of the pace, trust that the direction is the correct one and the time needed to get to that place is right. The one who is led can’t be the lead, as he doesn’t know the way, so he needs to rely on the leader.

The person who is being led can have a sense of peace and calmness in the heart because he doesn’t need to make crucial decisions, but just needs to follow. He doesn’t need to worry about being lost or late, as the responsibility is with the leader.

When David said that the Lord ‘leads me besides quiet waters’, I believe that he allowed himself to be led. He had chosen to submit to God’s guidance. No matter how dangerous the road might be, how many detours it might require for people get to the final destination, ‘the quiet waters’ are still available along the journey for those who trust the Lord.

The Lord desires us to be led by Him. He knows the way when we don’t. He shows the way when we are lost. His timing is perfect, even if it doesn’t feel that way.

Are we willing to be led by Him without telling Him where we would like to go and by what time we would like to reach our destination? Are we willing to submit to Him fully and trust His guidance, even when we don’t understand and don’t have a big picture?

May our hearts be like David’s, saying, ‘He leads me besides quite waters’. Lord, I am following.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your great plans for my life. Thank You that I can follow You and trust Your direction. Help me to allow You to lead me in every situation and circumstance of my life in Jesus’ name, Amen.
