Lamb of God

by Pam Smith

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
John 1:29, NLT

When Jesus was walking the earth, hardly anyone knew the reason why He’d come. But one person, John the Baptist, knew exactly why Jesus had come and what He was going to do.

People thought Jesus was a godly man, who healed many, worked miracles, preached wisdom with many parables, and could be the one who would deliver them from the Roman occupation. The truth didn’t dawn on them, but God had revealed it to John as he prepared to baptise Jesus, and he spoke those prophetic words, ‘Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!’ John knew that God would provide the sacrificial lamb (as He did for Abraham in Genesis 22:8).

Those who followed Jesus, even those who were raised from the dead and healed of many diseases, didn`t realise that He was the Lamb of God who was to be their Passover lamb.

I myself, at the age of fourteen, didn’t really understand why something that took place two thousand years ago could have anything to do with me, in the century I was living in. I knew that Jesus died for me and rose again. I knew that it was so I could be forgiven, but it was so long ago. It didn’t seem relevant to my life.

Then I picked up a little book called ‘The Calvary Road’ by Roy Hessian, read it from cover to cover, and the scales fell from my eyes. I realised that the living Lord Jesus was the Lamb of God that took away my sins and washed me clean today when He shed His blood for me at Calvary that day. God took the sinless Christ and poured into Him our sins. Then, in the great exchange, He poured His goodness into us (2 Corinthians 5:21).

"You are my strength when I am weak,
You are the treasure that I seek,
You are my all in all.
Seeking You as a precious jewel,
Lord, to give up I’d be a fool,
You are my all in all.

Jesus, Lamb of God, worthy is Your name.

Taking my sin, my cross, my shame,
rising again, I bless Your name,
You are my all in all.
When I fall down, You pick me up;
When I am dry, You fill my cup.
You are my all in all."
(By Dennis Jernigan)

Prayer: Worthy is Your name, to receive all praise and worship, glory honour and blessing forever. Amen.
