Keep Looking at Jesus

by Patricia Lake

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:2, NKJV

Looking unto Jesus has to be one of the great major keys to walking in faith to keep us safely advancing in the narrow way. As we hold fast to His Word and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, He is indeed ‘a lamp unto our feet, and a light unto our path’ (Psalm 119:105), despite the world’s raging torrents. Many biblical characters discovered this in their own personal journeys. Noah heeded the warnings of God and moved in the fear of the Lord, building an ark to the saving of his household, despite the jeers and cruel mockings of the then known world.

Moses saw the unseen when he refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, thereby refusing to trade the greater riches of Christ for the fleeting natural riches of the age, and thus leading the nation of Israel out of bondage to freedom.

Rahab and her household were saved when she saw and chose the salvation of the Lord, leaving her past behind. Ruth, a gentile woman, entered the illustrious lineage of Christ when she clung to Israel’s God through His people.

The shepherds being privy to the Heavenly host, beheld the Saviour of the world as they were among the first to witness His first coming.

The much despised Zacchaeus beheld His restorer, as he climbed a tree in desperation for a glimpse of Jesus as He passed by.

As the eyes of blind Bartimaeus were opened, the first face he beheld was Jesus his healer, who brought him out of darkness to behold the Light of the world. To this day men marvel at these ordinary people who chose to believe God, rather than being influenced by the spirit of the age. In the tumultuous times in which we live there are many voices in the world, each trying to shout louder than the other for our attention, and vilifying those who choose God’s way. But only one voice matters and God encourages us to keep looking in His direction and tune out all other voices, only listening to Him. He will not compete with other voices for our attention.

The Word of the Lord still beckons us to look beyond the promises of the kings of the earth to see the promises of God. ‘Look unto me and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth, for I am God and there is none else’ (Isaiah 45:22). That says it all.
