How Hungry Are You?

He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty.

Have you ever noticed how much mention there is in the Bible about food? For someone like me who enjoys eating this is quite encouraging! Mealtimes were often special times of coming together and sharing. I love to prepare food for my family, and some of our best times together are when we sit around the table talking over a meal. I believe this is much on the heart of God, who prepares a table for us (Psalm 23:5).

However, the best enjoyment of food comes when we`re really hungry. If we`ve been snacking on crisps, sweets and other non-nutritious things throughout the day, we won`t fully appreciate a nourishing meal in the evening. The same is true in our spiritual lives. If we`ve been filling our lives with worldly things, to please our carnal nature, we won`t be hungry for the pure spiritual food that God has for us. The more we hunger and thirst after God, the more we`ll be satisfied. We`re told in Luke 1:53 that it`s the hungry who are filled with good things, but the rich (those who have filled their lives with other things) who will be sent away empty.

Jesus is the bread of life (John 6:35) and He is the only One who can truly satisfy every need that we have. Why would we hunger after anything else? Isaiah 55:2 says: “Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labour on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.”

How hungry are you for the rich fare that God has for you today? He delights in preparing a table for us, but we need to come to Him, to sit with Him and to feed on all that He has for us.

Prayer: Lord, I`m sorry for feeding on things that don`t satisfy. Thank You that You are the Bread of Life and that You have prepared a table for me. Please give me more of a hunger for You and for the things that truly satisfy, in Jesus` Name, Amen.
