Hold Your Ground! Be Ever Watchful!
by Bob Stull
1 Chronicles 11 tells us of one of the times David and his army were in battle against the Philistines. The Philistines are, in my mind, the enemy that just won’t go away. It’s an enemy that was always looking for an opportunity to take David and his men out, to deter them from Yahweh’s call upon their lives, to frustrate Israel and its call to be God’s people in the midst of and enemy infested world.
Verses 13 and 14 give us divine instruction as to what we are to do to face the enemy that seeks to prevent us from fulfilling Yahweh’s call up on us.
We all have been given a ‘field’ - an arena in which we function, a place where we have influence, where we are called to be a faithful presence in the midst of an evil infested world.
What is the Lord’s command: Hold your ground! Stand fast! Be ever watchful of an ever present enemy! Keep alert, the enemy prowls looking for someone to devour! (See Ephesians, James, and Romans)
Our call is to be ever faithful to defend our field with all the resources that our Lord gives us. There is a fight…there is a battle… we are at war big time with Satan and his fallen angels, and the evil in men and women around the world.
But we can defend with vigour because OUR GOD REIGNS! He has won the victory, the deliverance in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ! Worry not about being inadequate to the task. Surrender to Jesus and watch Him give you strength to go forth in obedience, as the Holy Spirit uses you to make a difference for Christ and His kingdom!
Prayer: Abba, help me to defend my field with all the strength, wisdom, and love that comes from You in Your Son, Jesus. Forgive me the times when I listen to the lies that tell me it’s too tough this time. Help me to stand….hold my ground, then fight with Your strength, day by day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
