He Knows My Name

by Mechthild Walz

Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine.
Isaiah 43:1, NKJV

Just recently I came across this song again: ‘I have a Maker, he formed my heart. Before even time began, my life was in his hands. He knows my name, he knows my every thought. He sees each tear that falls, and hears me when I call. I have a Father, He calls me His own. He′ll never leave me, no matter where I go. He knows my name, he knows my every thought. He sees each tear that falls, and hears me when I call’ (by Tommy Walker).

Isn’t this amazing? To me it seems nearly unbelievable that the LORD GOD, the creator of the universe, would know my name, meaning He knows me personally. He knows me and sees me even in the midst of a huge crowd, and He is interested in me. Otherwise, my name would not matter to Him.

He has not only called me by name, but He goes on to say, “You are mine!” He means, “You belong to me!” For so many the cry of their heart is to belong to someone. And here is God’s simple answer: “You are mine. You belong to me!”

For many people it is special when we remember their name. It makes them feel important and valued. A number of years ago I worked with street children in a big city in Southeast Asia. When I was out and about downtown, in the cemeteries, where some of them lived, or in the slums, I would call the children I knew by their names.

This usually brought a sparkle to their eyes and a smile to their faces. So often those kids had been treated like rubbish. It made them feel special when I remembered their names. But how much more special they felt when I told them that there is a Heavenly Father who knows their names, and He loves them, and they are important to Him.

The Bible tells us that, from the very beginning of our existence, even before we were born, God already knew us by name. Before I was born the Lord called me from my mother’s womb; He has spoken my name’ (Isaiah 49:1b, NIV).
