Guardian of my Soul

by Pam Smith

Like sheep you wandered away from God, but now you have returned to your Shepherd, the guardian of your souls who keeps you safe from all attacks.
1 Peter 2:25, LB

Sheep are such stubborn and stupid animals and go off, following one another into all sorts of trouble. They get through fences, across roads, down cliffs and into fields full of crops. One of my favourite children’s programmes is ‘Shaun the Sheep’. The surprised look that comes on his face when he realizes that he has got into a mess once again always makes me laugh.

It’s just like me. I’m one of God’s sheep. On my walk with the Good Shepherd I can get distracted from His green pastures and quiet streams, but I thank the Lord that He guards my soul. He keeps ‘His eye on me’ when I come and go. His voice draws me back to Himself. He restores my failing health. He has splints and bandages for my injuries and leads me back into His way.

Even when problems, accidents, physical illnesses or disease afflict us He can work these things together for good. Through healing and also showing us how to deal with the roots of the problem He brings about His purposes in our lives. We never need fear what man, the enemy, or just life throws at us, for He will never let us down. He is the true guardian of our souls. ‘The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep’. He always has a way, where there seems to be no way for us.

Isaiah 53:6 says we are the ones who strayed away like sheep! We left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet God laid on Him the guilt and sins of every one of us.

If you’re not in His fold yet, He’s ready to be found by you. He knows just where you are and He’s waiting for you to accept the sacrifice of His life, laid down for you, and to take your place amongst His sheep. You will then be able to say, ‘I need never fear again.’ As Psalm 91:2 expresses it: ‘This I declare that he alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I am trusting him.’

Prayer: Thank You Lord that I can trust You completely with my life. I recommit myself, my future and all my days into Your safekeeping. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
