Great Britain: a Post-Christian Country?

Great Britain has been blessed by a strong Christian heritage, with countless men and women who, through the word and deed of their Christian witness, have influenced the destiny of this nation. Whilst being far from perfect, our principles of justice and morality have, historically, been largely shaped by the truths of the Bible. The articles of the thirteenth century Magna Carta, seen by many as a foundation of justice around the world, were described in the preamble as being to the honour of God… and the better ordering of our kingdom.

In the last few decades, however, it’s become clear that the Christian voice in Britain is being rapidly replaced by the growing influence of humanism, a wisdom dependent only on humankind. Indeed, it seems that the voice from God’s word, once so much a part of British culture, is now being increasingly suppressed. Here are a few of the countless recent headlines that point towards a significant change in the spiritual climate of this nation:
Historian says that the Church of England will cease to exist in 20 years.

Commentator says that new legislation will have direct impact on the ability of Christians to preach and teach Christian beliefs.

Senior judge says that British courts are no longer Christian.

A commission on religion and belief in public life concludes that Britain is no longer a Christian country and should stop acting as if it is.

What should the response of followers of Jesus be? Although, thankfully, some believers are called to high office in government, the Kingdom of God is not of this world, and Jesus hasn’t asked His Body on earth to seek political rule over the nations while we wait for His return.

We can’t force people to be influenced by a Christian perspective on the decisions being made in a nation, but we can strive to make sure that a clear Biblical voice is both spoken and heard. It’s likely, and perhaps necessary, in these uncertain days, that the ways of the Kingdom of God and the humanist ways of society will become increasingly polarised, and therefore more easily seen for what they truly are: the difference between spiritual light and darkness.

Prayer: Father, thank You for where there has been a true Christian heritage in our nations. We’re so sorry that this has very often been squandered, in preference to our nation determining its future on human wisdom alone. Give us a passion to intercede for our nation, and the courage to be those who are salt and light in the darkening days that will be experienced before the precious return of Jesus. Amen.
