God’s Witnesses

by Trevor Davies

“But you are my witnesses, O Israel!” says the LORD. “You are my servant. You have been chosen to know me, believe in me, and understand that I alone am God. There is no other God -there never has been, and there never will be. “I, yes I, am the LORD, and there is no other Saviour. First I predicted your rescue, then I saved you and proclaimed it to the world. No foreign god has ever done this. You are witnesses that I am the only God, says the Lord.”
Isaiah 43:10-12, NLT

When a prosecutor or defence lawyer is preparing his case to go to court, one of the first things that he will look for is a key witness that he can use to help him as he presents his case. Also, when the police are called to a traffic accident, one of the first things they will ask is, “Was there anyone who saw the accident happen”? that is a first-hand witness. A witness can be very important in both cases; in helping a lawyer solve his case, and the police find the cause of the accident.

In the above Bible passage, we read that one of the callings on Israel, as a nation, is to be witnesses for God, in that He is the only one true God. That calling is still on Israel today, as a nation they represent God to the world. They’re living proof that He exists, and that’s why they come under so much unjustified attack from the nations of the world today.

Why are the nations so angry? Why do they waste their time with futile plans? The kings of the earth prepare for battle, the rulers plot together against the Lord and against His anointed one. “Let’s break their chains they cry, and free ourselves from slavery to God” (Psalm 2:1-3.)

In Acts 1:8, Jesus, speaking to the disciples says: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses telling people about me everywhere – in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria and to the ends of the earth”.

Like Israel as a Nation, we, as believers, are called to be living witnesses for God and his Son Jesus. Also, like Israel, we’ll find that we’ll come under more and more attack as we stand for Him in this very anti-God world. But take heart from the words Jesus spoke in the above passage; ‘But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you’. We’re not called to witness in our own strength, but through the Holy Spirit, in us.

Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank You that You’ve called me and set me apart for a purpose. Help me today to be a faithful witness for You, not only in the things I say, but in the way that I live my life; not in my own strength, but letting Your Holy Spirit work through me. Amen.
