God Getting our Attention

by Bernard Kariuki

The Lord says, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.
Psalm 32:8, ESV

Throughout the generations, God has used different ways to get our attention.

We know the story of Moses and how God preserved him ever since his birth for his special assignment of having a hand in letting God’s people go. He fled from Egypt until finally God had him exactly where He needed him and, when everything aligned, God lit the bush.

If you see a fire burning a bush and it’s not consuming the bush, God wants to get your attention. Moses responded and God used him to set the children of Israel free.

Another example would be if you were to men in fire and the fire is not consuming them, then God would be seeking your attention. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego told king Nebuchadnezzar that they did not need to defend themselves against him: their God would rescue them from his power. They stood for what was right and indeed God stood with them. And when king Nebuchadnezzar ordered for them to be thrown in the furnace, God got Nebuchadnezzar’s attention. When he saw four men in the fire, walking around unharmed, yet he knew they had thrown only three in, King Nebuchadnezzar responded by acknowledging the true God and that there was no other God like Him. He decreed that no one should speak against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. God got his attention through fire and four men that the fire didn’t consume, and he had a godly response. Daniel 3:16

In these examples we see God using unusual scenarios, things that are unexplainable, things that defy logic, so that His people do not miss His attention.

At the crucifixion of Jesus,  Romans soldiers and other people witnessed Him on the cross, but only one got God’s attention. The Roman soldier who acknowledged for sure that Jesus was the son of God.  Has God been trying to get your attention? Have you heard it or squashed it? How have you responded to it? We do not want to be hearing but not understanding, seeing but never perceiving (Acts 28:26).

Let us give Him full permission to instruct and teach us the way to go, for He knows better and that’s why His eyes are upon us, getting our attention.
