Glitter

Recently at Glyndley Manor a group of guests on a Restoration Week were making candle holders during a creativity session. They were using small glasses and decorating them with ribbons and sticky shapes. There were coloured pens to draw shapes, glue and glitter. When I walked past to see how they were getting on, their faces were not only smiling but they were sparkling! The minute grains of glitter that were supposed to be on the glass had been transferred from sticky fingers to their hair and cheeks and now these small particles were catching the light and twinkling like stars in the night sky.
Later that evening I noticed something. All over the carpet in numerous places around Glyndley Manor I could see small sparkles of light. It seems that everywhere that someone had walked they had spread the glitter and now it was twinkling back at me from the most unexpected places.
It reminded me of Jesus’ words about being light in the world. Each disciple has a responsibility to bring the light of the Kingdom of God into whatever sphere of life he or she is involved in. Jesus desires that, wherever we go, we make a difference by depositing something of His life-giving Light. He desires that even our small light should be seen and inspire hope in the darkest place.
Paul picks up this idea and says we should be obviously different from the world around us. We should be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of crooked and perverse nation. Among these you shine as lights in the world (Philippians 2:15).
Those little glitter sparkles shining up from the dark carpet in unexpected places all round Glyndley Manor reminded me of this principle. They reminded me that wherever we go we should leave a deposit of the Kingdom of Light - a little ‘twinkle’ of God’s Heavenly Kingdom of Light.
Prayer: Father I ask that Your Holy Spirit would so inhabit me that I might be a small but noticeable light in the darkness of my everyday life in this dark world. That people might see where I have been by the light and love that I have left as a deposit. In Jesus name, Amen.
