Gift of Truth

I could have no greater joy than to hear that my children are following the truth
3 John v 4, NTL

Last year, I was at a conference where I was challenged afresh by a statement one of the speakers made. Do we make the truth as important as Yeshua does? God’s word says, in Romans 1:25, ‘They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshipped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise’.

I asked myself the question, “Do I make the truth important in my life?” We all need to guard the truth and not fall into the trap of serving created things rather than the creator.

We’ve just come through the season of Christmas with all its commercialisation, the food, and the gifts. How often did we see the truth of Christmas proclaimed? It seems to me that we often saw the ‘stuff’ of Christmas being worshipped more than we did the real reason for the Season, Jesus Christ our Saviour.

It’s quite a sad reflection of where we are in this world today. It seems that we live in a world today where created things, and the things we’ve made for ourselves can hold much more sway in our lives than God Himself, who is the Creator.

There’s little adherence to the God of truth and His word. In fact, we see it being pushed out of schools, out of people’s lives and, in many instances, even the Church, where sometimes deception seems to have come, replacing the truth for a lie.

In these days we need a plumb-line of truth on which to base our lives, as described in Amos 7:7-8. The plumb-line is what keeps our lives straight and focussed. If we build a wall, using a plumb-line, then it’s straight on its foundation. We all need this foundation of truth in our lives, so we can live according to God’s precepts. We all need the Lord to put that desire deep within us for truth above all else. Jesus always spoke the truth, and His desire for us is to follow that truth also.

Psalm 25:4-5 says, ‘Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you’.

Prayer: I ask You, Lord, to place Your truth deep within my heart and spirit so that I follow You closely, and so do the things that You’ve ordained for me to do. Teach me Your truth above all else. Help me to make the truth the most important thing in my life. I can only do this with Your help, Lord. Amen.
