Get Over it!

Recently there was a talk programme on secular radio where the presenter had put forward the subject, “Why were Christians the only ones always picked upon, put down, accused because of their convictions and persecuted for sharing the Gospel, while other faiths were respected and treated with ‘kid gloves’, in case they were offended.” And he asked why did Christians always turn the other cheek?

There followed a great debate among listeners and many testimonies were aired by believers of the mercy and grace of God. Bible prophecies were shared, that in the last days Christians would be marginalised and persecuted and freedom to preach the Gospel would be halted. Even God would be eliminated from society and we were now in the ‘last days’.

One man from New Zealand phoned in and explained that a Christian, by turning the other cheek, giving his coat also and going the extra mile, was ‘choosing’ to do something positive, thus taking control, ceasing from becoming the victim, letting God take charge of his destiny and becoming a blessing.

When we are angry, hurt or offended by anyone, by choosing to forgive them we can take control according to Christ’s law of love and remove any foothold that Satan can use in our relationships. There is wonderful freedom in forgiveness.

Suffering is all part of the work we have been given. Jesus is our example. We should follow in His steps. He never sinned, He never answered back when insulted; when He suffered He did not threaten to get even; He left His case in the hands of God who always judges fairly (1 Peter 2:21-23).

Prayer: Dear Father, may I not be easily offended, but forgive willingly, get over it quickly and give a blessing in return. Please help those who have been really hurt badly by someone. May they be able to release them into Your hands and to know Your continuing peace and comfort. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
