Facing Our Fears

“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am Your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.”
Isaiah 41:10, NLT

From time to time, at different stages in our lives, we all have to face fears. Some are small and some are bigger and can take some time to overcome. Even if we are Christians, there can still be times when different fears can trouble us, but the difference between us and others who do not trust in the Lord is that we have the Lord God, who is with us and in us by His Holy Spirit.

Over many years I have had a fear of the internet. The first hurdle I had to get over was using emails. I vividly remember being terrified as a dear friend set up an email account for me. I don’t know what I thought would happen if I wrote an email, but it was a real struggle. I got through it, though, and now I can write emails without any worries. But then came the fear of actually using the internet for shopping. By this time, I was married, and Dean, my husband, patiently taught me, and I overcame that fear, although I will only visit one website for shopping.

Then, about ten days ago, I had a phone call from the dentist wanting me to go for a check-up. I needed to complete a form with my medical history, and it was necessary to do it online. I had never done that before, and I was scared. Dean said he would help me. But then he was called away urgently to his parents and I was at home. The forms needed to be done before my appointment. I prayed again about it, and this time I was able to face competing the forms on the dentist`s online portal. What a relief it was, but I knew it was only the Lord who enabled me to overcome that fear!

Is there a particular thing you are facing that is causing you to feel anxious or fearful? Nothing is too trivial to talk to the Lord about. He understands you completely and what has happened to you to cause you to have this particular fear, and He is ready to help you. It may be, like me, He will lead you step by step. There are still some things about the internet that I am afraid of. Maybe this prayer will help you to bring your fear to your loving Heavenly Father.

Prayer: O my Father, I thank You that You know all about me, all that I have been through. You know the things that make me feel afraid, and I come to You now with (name your fear). I thank You that You hear me, and that You have a purpose for me. I ask You to give me the grace and the strength to face and overcome this fear, and I will give You all the glory. I ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
