Desperate Interruptions

Jesus said Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out of me
Luke 8:46, NIV

When you`ve given your day to the Lord, I`m sure you have found, as I have, that very often there can be unexpected interjections and interruptions as the Lord reorganises our carefully planned agendas for the day. Sometimes, if we are extremely busy, we may not welcome such interruptions very graciously, especially if we lose our train of thought, or if we haven`t yet accomplished what we set out to do. However, if we are led by the Spirit of God, we will be surprised at what He will do.

As Jesus Himself was on His way to Jairus` home following a desperate plea from Jairus to heal his dying daughter, something unusual happened. In the middle of the jostling crowd, someone touched the hem of His garment and extracted healing from Him. Jesus` immediate question of “Who touched me?” drew incredulous looks and comments from His disciples as they observed that the crowd that was pressing Him was so great that they thought how could He possibly ask such a question. But Jesus replied, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out of me”. Most acts of healing came from a direct word or touch from Jesus, but this one was different.

The act of faith will always reach Jesus, whether through the urgency of silent prayer from an aching heart, or the desperate touch of the hem of His garment through a thronging crowd of excited onlookers. There were two desperate people in the crowd that day, Jairus and the anonymous woman, both of whom were determined to receive their much needed help from the Saviour. His question drew her out of hiding, for her testimony of what the Lord had done for her must be made public. His response to her trembling confession was, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace”.

Is your prayer of faith one of desperation today? Jesus is always on His way to help someone, and your urgent cry can take Heaven by storm and draw the Lord`s attention. However busy you are, expect the unexpected. Jesus is never too busy for us. Take a moment to send your desperate plea to the Throne of Grace. Reach out in faith and access whatever you need by faith for yourself or others.

Of course, depending on the nature of your request, His answer may not come packaged in the way you might prefer, but remember He will always give you the best. Today may be the day when He answers beyond your wildest dreams. Jesus never passes us by, and His answer is on its way to you even before you finish speaking. ‘The righteous cry out and the Lord hears them. He delivers them from all their troubles’ (Psalm 34:17) and ‘Before they call I will answer’ (Isaiah 64:24).

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for reorganising my days to suit Your agenda, and forgive me when my faith falls short. Help me to be led by Your Holy Spirit moment by moment, and may Your will be done in my life as it is in Heaven. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
