Delight

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night.
Psalm 1:1-2, NIV

I was given a digital picture frame for my birthday. I loaded it with some of my favourite pictures and my children have added pictures of my grandchildren to it through an app.

Recently, I was smiling as I saw one after another of my grandchildren’s faces and I noticed the delight on their faces. I realized that, when children are young and in a healthy environment, they are easily delighted. Little things bring them great joy. Even a very young baby who is just starting to smile will smile just by looking at the face of their mother.

Thinking about delight brought to mind today’s scripture. We are blessed when our delight is in the law of the Lord. I looked up the definition of delight and found this: “Delight means a feeling of great pleasure or satisfaction, a thing that gives pleasure, or to take pleasure in something. It's often associated with joy, happiness, and a sense of well-being.”

It makes me stop and think, “Is this how I view the law of the Lord?” How easy is it to have a negative view of the word “law”! We may think of it as restrictive, keeping us from doing what we want. But the law of the Lord brings freedom! When we meditate on it, it truly does bring us joy and a sense of well-being. I pray God brings all of us to a new appreciation of His law.
