Darkness and Light
by Goran Andersson
It’s easy for me to picture the fascinating battle between light and darkness because right now in Sweden we’re enjoying daylight almost twenty four hours a day. Soon however, slowly but surely, the hours of darkness will start increasing. The days will grow shorter, and darkness will rule. And then it will change yet again. In the middle of January we’ll notice the light coming back, days becoming longer, and life returning to our land!
But when God spoke light into the darkness in creation it wasn’t like the slow increase of daylight in January. I rather think it was like an electric torch suddenly breaking the darkness, and a total change took place. God is light, and there’s no darkness in Him, so He wanted no darkness in the creation that He spoke into being. Wherever His will is being done, light always breaks the grip of darkness.
Jesus opened the eyes of the blind. The power of darkness was broken. Light overwhelmed the happy people who met him. They were blind, but now they could see. And the apostle Paul speaks about the light which transforms the inner man. Once we were simply lost in darkness through moral depravity and without any knowledge of God. How could we really dream of a better future under those circumstances?
But God is the God of light! And the Bible tells the thrilling drama of the battle between darkness and light in individuals as well as nations. History tells us about dramatic times in nations when light broke forth, through times of awakenings and revivals. And testimonies tell when the same light has transformed individuals and families.
Times may change, but God never changes. What seems impossible to man, is possible with God. The Bible, as well as history, tells the story of individuals and groups of people who set their hope on God. They stood up against darkness, and cried out to God for light, and God answered. Light broke through, and darkness was gone. ‘The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it’ (John 1:5).
You may live in a place that’s filled with darkness. Yes, you may even feel the darkness trying to swallow you up. But cry out to God. His light will break forth! Your heart will never be overcome with darkness, and the place where you live will be struck by the light that’s in you. Our God is the God of light, and He will never, never, never let darkness triumph over light!
